Today,  a few days before the 10th anniversary of the uprising in Libya in 2011, the warring parties of Libyan rivals agreed to form a government of three members Presidential Council with a Prime Minister.

Last year in October 2020 United Nations envoy Stephanie Williams convinced warring parties to sign a ceasefire and start a political settlement.

Libya has been divided into two govts since 2014 and warlord Khalifa Haftar launched a militia attack in 2019 to capture the capital Tripoli from UN recognised govt of Fayez Al Sarraj.

Mohammed Al Menfi of Eastern region will be the Head of  the Presidency Council and Abdulhamid Dbeibeh, a businessman from Misrata will be PM till elections in December. Musa al-Koni from Southern and Abdullah al-Lafi from Western region of Libya will be other members. Members of the new govt will not be allowed to fight elections in December.

The members of govt are without direct ties to foreign powers like France, Turkey, Egypt, or Russia and members are represented from different locations of the country.

It is not going to be a smooth transfer because militias are still there due to the oil wealth. Let us pray for peace in Libya.
