Post of 11 May 2022

Tuesday, on 10 May 2022 Prince Charles addressed the United Kingdom’s opening of Parliament because of Queen Elizabeth continued health problem.

For the first time in almost 60 years, the Queen did not deliver the annual speech outlining the government’s legislative agenda to parliament.

The speech is usually announced by the monarch, but queen Elizabeth has missed the event only twice in her 70-year reign, when she was pregnant in 1959 and 1963. On both occasions, the legislative agenda was announced by then lord chancellor Lord Kilmuir. But this time the current lord chancellor Dominic Raab was not given this honour and the speech was delivered by Crown Prince Charles.

On 9th May 2022, a royal order known as “letters patent” was issued to delegate authority to open parliament by Prince Charles. This shows that the monarchy is bringing the future King to prominence.

In April Prince Charles stood in for the Queen at the Maundy Thursday Church service at Windsor on Easter.

The Queen’s next big public event will be the platinum jubilee celebrations from June 2-5 next month. There will be a three days holiday in the UK for platinum jubilee celebrations.
