The Europe’s first eco-friendly mosque in Cambridge was opened to public in April. The Cambridge Mosque Project was established in 2008 by Dr Timothy Winter, a lecturer in Islamic studies at the University of Cambridge.
It is designed by Marks Barfield Architects, an expert in sacred and innovative architecture. The mosque’s design includes a garden, portico, yard, lavatory, prayer room and bathing cubicle.
Cambridge Mosque costs £23m. More than 10,000 people donated for the mosque including Turkey and Qatar Fund. It has capacity for 1,000 worshippers inside the mosque and people can also pray in the garden. The two Imams are working here, one from Bosnia and other from Turkey.
The mosque is eco-friendly with respect to conservation of rain water to irrigate garden’s plants, 30% of mosques energy from sun power, light and fresh air from the windows on the ceiling.
The non-Muslims are allowed in the new mosque to see the prayer.
